Building sand delivery in Cape Town
Building sand is the coarse, sharp sand used in mortar for laying bricks and blocks and, mixed with stone and cement, in concrete. It is the material most sites run out of first, so it pays to have a supplier who can deliver at short notice.
What it’s used for
- Mortar for laying clay bricks and concrete blocks
- Site-mixed concrete for footings, slabs and columns, with 19mm stone
- Bedding under paving, where a supplier has no paving sand
How to order
Sand is sold by the cubic metre (m³) and delivered loose by tipper truck. Small jobs often take a 3 m³ or 6 m³ load; bigger sites take 10 m³ or more. Say how much you need and where it can be tipped, and suppliers quote with delivery included.

Questions
- How much building sand do I need?
- A rough guide for brickwork is about 0.6 m³ of building sand per 1,000 clay stock bricks in a half-brick wall. Allow extra for waste and for any concrete you mix on site.
- What's the difference between building sand and plaster sand?
- Building sand is coarser and sharper, which gives mortar and concrete strength. Plaster sand is finer and softer so it spreads smoothly on a wall. Using building sand for plaster leaves a rough, cracked finish.
- Can I get sand delivered today?
- Often, yes. Use an urgent order: it goes to suppliers near your site who can deliver in time, and they reply with a price and delivery time.
